A checklist for using AI agents in SEO without losing the business outcome.

Before the agent starts

Talk to sales. Understand what customers actually buy. Study the competition. Choose a winnable place to start.

When the agent proposes a plan

Check the keyword against buyer behavior: do buyers search the broad category, or a specific problem, or compare vendors? Are the broad results dominated by publishers you can't displace?

Decide per page

Sometimes the right move is to improve one existing page. Sometimes it's to leave a page that's working alone.

When the agent scales

Watch for pages with little value, overlapping content and site changes made without understanding their effect on the pages that bring in customers.

Google's view

Google doesn't penalize a site simply for using AI. Mass-producing pages to manipulate rankings can violate its spam policies. The risk comes from the bad work being done, not the tool's label.

The rule

A dashboard of completed tasks is not qualified pipeline or revenue. The agent reports work completed; your business carries the cost of work that shouldn't have been done.
